Using Businesses To Empower Local Communities
Since the Tsunami 2004, thousands of lives and homes have been devastated by the disaster. While many are now in progress of redevelopment and reconstruction, finding a means of livelihood remains the greatest challenge to most. To alleviate the poverty issues faced by the survivors, small self-sustaining business ventures have been developed and have been proven to be a great success.
Digital Printing In Meulaboh
This business is the only one of its kind, established in the main town of Meulaboh. Since its inception in 2007 and fully funded by Touch Ministry Singapore the venture has received work orders from various schools and companies in Meulaboh.
Since its inception in Nov 07, the shop has employed 2 local villagers to help run the shop. Services of digital printing include printing of any photos, pictures, slogans or words on pins, clock, t-shirts, mugs, posters, calendar tailored to customers’ needs and requirement. Orders have already been coming in from various non-governmental agencies (both local and overseas) and large corporations located in Meulaboh.
Bakery Business In Meulaboh
Bread is a common staple for the locals in Banda Aceh and the surrounding villages. Six weeks of trial project from Feb to April 08 received more than 4,000 orders for the cakes and bread made by the shop. Besides having such a business enterprise in the main town, the team is also conducting baking classes to teach and train more local women with baking skills.
